A Foothold in Quantum Mechanics

Welcome

Quantum mechanics can be a tough subject to learn if you are not a college physics student. You can only get so far by reading popular science articles and books. How can you break through to a deeper level of understanding? You may not want to be able to actually perform calculations in quantum mechanics; however, you would like a basic understanding of how quantum mechanics works.

The goal of this website is to move you past the popular science level of understanding. The choice, organization, and expression of content have been carefully planned to give you a fighting chance. Here is some of the work you will need to do along the way:

The rewards of understanding will be well worth the work.

Contents

The website content is divided into ten concise chapters. As you can guess by some of the chapter names, we will focus on the electron as the example quantum entity.

Author

My name is Jeremy Britton. I have a PhD and am a Professional Engineer in civil engineering, the field in which I practice and teach. I also write about science. I have recently written about gravity, DNA, and quantum mechanics in The Naked Scientists and The Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics and Its Applications.

Consultants

The physicist Sara Ismail-sutton, PhD was hired to review the technical accuracy of the content on this website. Dan Sahagian helped me create the website.

Dedication

For Adalyn and Adrian, my niece and nephew.
